Family = chu e lang/ chulai lang [chu3 ay1 lang2/ chu4lai3 lang2]

  • chu [chu3] = house
  • e [ay1] = of (possessive marker)
  • chulai [chu4lai3] = inside the house
  • lang [lang2] = person/ people
The tone of "chu (house)" is changed from the 3rd tone "chu3" into the 4th tone "chu4" when the word following "chu" has the same 3rd tone, in this case, "lai3". Chu3 -> Chu4lai3

  • lu [lu4] = you
  • e [ay1] = of
  • lu e [lu4 ay1] = your
  • chulai [chu4lai3] = inside the house

  • kuikai [kui4kai2] = how many
